Daniel "Danny" Gerard Barden
September 27, 2005 ~ December 14, 2012

Daniel's bell is C7. When C7 rings, we remember a remarkable young boy whose spirit was one that embodied pure, unadulterated kindness, leaving a lasting impact on his community.

It's often said that some stars shine so brightly, they burn out quickly. Perhaps this is the best way to describe Daniel Barden, a radiant seven-year-old whose heart and kindness outshone many others. A compassionate soul, Daniel left behind a legacy of empathy and warmth that continues to touch the lives of those who knew him, even as he is missed deeply. From an early age, he had a special kind of light about him, a way of reaching out to people and making them feel loved and seen.

Daniel's zest for life was evident in his active participation in activities such as riding waves at the beach, playing drums in a band with his siblings, and being an enthusiastic member of the Newtown soccer and swim teams. He loved making s'mores around the bonfire at his Papa's house in Smallwood, NY, and the shared joy of reading.

Daniel loved many things. Playing on the soccer team, foosball, riding beach waves, making s'mores around the campfire, and his stuffed cat, Ninja Cat, who Daniel was buried with. He especially loved playing outside in the mud and getting dirty, which prompted his family to create a mudfest in his honor. Beyond the superficial things, Daniel loved to help others, whether it was holding the door for a stranger or showing love to his Sandy Hook Elementary classmates. He loved the world around him.

What set Daniel apart was his extraordinary compassion, a characteristic that often made his parents marvel at their youngest son's wisdom and empathy. Whether it was questioning a teacher's approach, being moved by a poignant song lyric, or noticing the loneliness of a special needs student at school, he displayed an understanding and thoughtfulness far beyond his tender years.

Daniel will never be forgotten. A bell for Daniel will always ring at Christmas.
